Magna Steyr offers a flexible green-car platform
Magna Steyr demonstrates its Mila automotive platform with this concept car, at the Geneva auto show.

With a concept car, on display at the Geneva auto show, the company is aiming to illustrate what it can offer to carmakers through its Mila automotive platform: Magna Steyr would build the car's innards, then the carmaker would slap on a body shell and badges.
Mila is designed as a flexible platform for the manufacturing of either electric cars or hybrids, allowing automakers to market their own green cars without having to do years of costly research.
With its 67-horsepower electric motor and 10-kilowatt battery pack, Mila-based cars have an electric range of only 32 miles, and accelerating to 62 mph takes a whopping 17 seconds. With a gas engine added to work as a generator, Magna Steyr says the Mila will go 174 miles.
The Mila's hybrid system can drive the car either under electric power only; as a series hybrid, where the gas engine recharges the batteries; or as a parallel hybrid, with the gas engine sends power directly to the wheel for speeds of more than 44 mph.
Magna Steyr's battery module contains its own load-balancing software.

Magna Steyr has designed a lithium ion battery module with built-in software for load balancing and power control. The modules can be combined into a battery pack and will work seamlessly together, providing electricity for the vehicle without overheating or overusing a single module.
Although it hasn't licensed the Mila platform specifically, Ford has already signed a deal with Magna Steyr to provide its electric power train for a vehicle to be launched in the United States in 2011. The deal specifies a small car powered by a single electric motor, with a single-speed transmission. Range will be approximately 100 miles.

McLaren MP4-12C production plans include retractable hardtop?

Reports emerging from the UK are giving us a hint at what to expect in the near future from McLaren Automotive in its bid to make an assault on the exotic supercar market. The reports stem from plans filed by the F1 team's nascent road car division and its new manufacturing facility next to the current McLaren Technology Center in Woking, England.
According to Autocar, part of the layout for the new facility has been dedicated to "RHT Sub Assembly", indicating that McLaren could be preparing to produce a retractable hardtop version of the new MP4-12C. While the notion of fitting a lightweight supercar with a heavy folding roof mechanism may seem antithetical to its ethos, Ferrari made huge advances with the roof on the California, and McLaren will be looking to show up its chief rival. Insiders suggest the McLaren's folding roof could be made of either aluminum alloy or possibly carbon fiber.
The overall timeline for production, however, suggests that McLaren may have to begin producing the MP4 where the outgoing SLR has been assembled in its current facility. McLaren has ambitious plans for a new factory adjacent to its existing headquarters, but with delivery of the first new supercars scheduled for November, the new underground facility isn't likely to be ready in time.

The British maker of the popular F1 (1993-1998) and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (2003-2008) has finally revealed its first super car, the McLaren MP4-12C. This two-seater mid-engine model have been developed in-house, meaning that it features no carryover parts from any other car, and will be produced by McLaren in the UK with sales expected to begin in early 2011.
This British super car is a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that delivers "around 600 horsepower and 600Nm or 443 lb-ft", with 80 per cent of torque available below 2,000rpm. The engine drives the rear wheels through two wet clutches and a McLaren-developed seven speed Seamless Shift dual clutch gearbox (SSG).
Malaysia International Automotive Parts & Accessories Expo
It has been a busy week, but do not worry that I will neglect this blog. I enjoy writing here and I am sure you enjoy reading some of my posts too. No matter how busy, I will still update here. Let’s check out where did I go last week… yes, no other place was better than the Malaysia International Automotive Parts & Accessories Expo or in short Auto ASEAN 2008.
The expo was held in Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil and on the last day before it was concluded I managed to sneak in with a RM5 entrance ticket.
So, obviously there were tonnes of cars on display and on sale. I know the above Honda Racing car photo doesn’t look very promising… I think I am slightly better at shooting models – pretty girls, I mean… and sucks at shooting anything else. 
No place to bounce my flash from and the result of direct flash is pretty obvious. The front of the car is overly exposed, although I tilted the speedlite some 35 degree upwards.
